こちらも久しぶりに書庫から引っ張り出してきて再読。やはり面白い。
1巻の発売が2011年という事で、既に連載開始から10年以上が経過したことを考えても、本作が狩猟とジビエ領域のマンガとして当時最先端を走っていたことは間違いないだろう。というか、唯一無二だった気がするわけで、流石のイブニング編集部である。
当時は毎回楽しみに発売日に単行本を購入していたわけだが、最終巻と知らずに第七巻を買って読んでいたら、山賊ダイアリーに似つかわしくない見開きページが描かれていて、あれ？と思いながら読み進めていると、あれよあれよというまに唐突に最終話を迎えてしまったという、そんななんとも寂しい記憶が蘇った。
ただ、狩猟のみに絞ったマンガは一旦終わりというだけで、今後は、サバイバルをテーマにした「山賊ダイアリーSS」が開始されるという案内が最終7巻に収録されていたので安心していたわけだが、結局、SSのほうは単行本一冊で休載となってしまい、現在に至るわけである。
作者の「岡本健太郎」自身は「ソウナンですか？」の原作を担当して漫画家は続けているわけだが、山賊としての身分はどうなってしまったのか、続編はないのか、と今も期待して待っている。
それぐらい、とにかく、この「山賊ダイアリー」という作品は面白いのである。
振り返って本作の魅力だが、やはりその圧倒的なオリジナリティではないだろうか。
アウトドアやジビエ料理などの作品は今でこそ世の中に出てくるようになったが、それでも、本作が持つ、「主人公が狩猟をして、殺した生き物の命を頂く」という作品の魅力に迫れるマンガは未だに見当たらない。
もちろん作画力だけを見たら足りない部分は多いのだが、その絵も作風とは十分にマッチしており、エッセイ漫画としては圧倒的に合格である。このなんともいえない味わいのある画風には何度読み返しても飽きさせない雰囲気がある。
加えて、なんでもかんでもとにかく口に入れて食べようとしてしまう作者のチャレンジ精神が本作の面白さをさらに強めている。
そんなギャグ寄りの作品かと思いきや、罠猟の師匠の佐々木さんとの泣かせるエピソードや、先輩漁師の赤木さんとの交流など本格的な漁師生活も匂わせていたわけだから、これはやはり山賊ダイアリー第二部を期待するな、というほうが酷なわけだ。
最終巻付近では、最初の頃に登場していた狩猟仲間たちが少しずつ去っていくあたりも、狩猟という動物の命を奪う行為の切なさと、それゆえのリアリティに満ちている。
まだ未読の方には、絶対オススメの唯一無二の山賊マンガであり、ブログ主は今でも作者「岡本健太郎」がタヌキを食べた話を書いてくれる日を待ち望んでいる。

"I pulled this out of my bookshelf for a re-read after a long time, and it's still interesting.
Considering that the first volume was released in 2011 and over a decade has passed since the start of the series, it's without a doubt that this work was at the forefront of hunting and game-themed manga at the time. In fact, it was unique and remarkable, fitting of the Evening editorial department's reputation.
I used to look forward to buying and reading the new volumes on their release day. But when I bought and read the seventh volume without knowing it was the final one, I was surprised to see an unusual double-page spread that didn't seem like it belonged in the "Mountain Bandit Diary". As I continued reading, I suddenly reached the last chapter, leaving me with a somewhat sad memory.
However, I was relieved when I found out that a spin-off manga series focusing on survival, "Mountain Bandit Diary SS," was announced in the final volume. But in the end, SS went on hiatus after only one volume, and it remains that way until now.
The author, Kentaro Okamoto, continues to be a manga artist and is in charge of the original work for "Are You Lost?" But I'm still waiting with hope and expectation for a sequel or an update on his status as a bandit.
Anyway, the real appeal of this work is its overwhelming originality. Although works such as outdoor activities and game-themed manga are now more common, there are still no manga like this that capture the charm of the protagonist hunting and consuming the animals they've killed.
Of course, there are many parts where the art is lacking, but it matches the style of the work well, and it's overwhelmingly successful as an essay manga. The unique and distinctive style of the art never gets boring no matter how many times you read it.
Moreover, the author's spirit of taking on any challenge by eating whatever comes to mind further strengthens the humor in this work.
Although it may seem like a comedic work, it also includes tear-jerking episodes with the mentor of trap hunting, Sasaki-san, and hints of a serious fisherman's life through the interactions with the senior fisherman, Akagi-san. It would be unfair to say not to expect a second part of the Mountain Bandit Diary.
In the final volume, as the hunting companions that appeared in the beginning slowly leave, the poignancy of taking away the lives of animals through hunting, and the resulting loneliness, becomes evident."
